300 Spartans Bluray Tamil Dubbed

I have been a huge fan of 300 as a movie since I first saw it as a youngster. In the new year, I decided to watch the new bluray version with my son. To my surprise, they dubbed it in Tamil and added subtitles in Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam. This may be my most favorite dub that I have seen (thus far). This is good news for all those around me who cannot understand English or don't like watching movies in English. But what is more exciting is they allowed the movie to retain its original subtitles but displayed them differently - through small white type on black background rather than large black type on white background (which is how they usually display subtitles). This way, it is easier for the viewer to read the subtitles while watching the movie.

I am not a dub purist by any means. I do not watch dubbed movies except for certain cases like 300 where I love the movie and don't want to miss anything while reading subtitles. However, while watching this bluray version, I had a few thoughts while watching the dubs.

My sons and I have watched a number of Hollywood & Bollywood movies dubbed in various Indian languages over the years and we also enjoy some of them. But there is a lot of room for improvement in most cases. For example, the voice actors are often very good at delivering their lines with emotions and subtlety. But they seem to have trouble sustaining the voice modulation for an extended period of time. The modulation seems to ebb away after every sentence or two. As a result, most dubs end up sounding like they are being read out loud rather than delivered with emotions. So far, I think my favorite dubs are those for Disney cartoons which sound natural and avoid sounding like being read out loud. The best example is Baloo's character in Jungle Book which is dubbed by an incredible voice artist called Nagesh. One of the reasons I prefer Baloo to any character in Jungle Book is because he sounds like Mowgli, not an imitation of him. The dubs with Nagesh also seem to have a slight accent which adds to the expressiveness of his voice in my opinion. The voice in Baloo doesn't sound dubbed at all. Just that he has a slight western accent in his delivery of lines - which is fine by me! However, there are few drawbacks in dubbing over the years. For one thing, it can be very time consuming when you have to constantly watch movie after movie for each language you are interested in. I have read that some producers are making it so you can choose between dubbed versions in different languages. But I suspect this doesn't mean much if the movies are already dubbed in the language you prefer.

The audio quality is superb! Plenty of detail and clarity. The subtitles are clear and easy to read even without optical zoom which I find is very helpful while watching movies with my sons who don't understand English well. As a bonus, there is even a 3D version of the movie available in the bluray. But I would not recommend it for kids - especially toddlers or preschool kids - due to the high volume of sound which will likely cause someone to get sick.
